Have you heard of the three I’s? If not then do not worry as a lot of childcare practitioners have not. This was introduced 18 months to 2 years ago and unfortunately as training slowed down due to COVID not everyone was taught this.

The recent update to the EYFS framework includes “Quality Teaching” which is being replaced by “Quality of Education” and judgements to be based on practice of Intent, Implementation and Impact.

What is Intent?

As part of the early years curriculum, you may follow a particular educational approach like Montessori or adopt particular ways of working such as planning as you go along. Or you may do child led learning using continuous play and small group activities.

Whatever way your nursery works it has to show that it is helping children to make progress across the seven areas of learning and is play based.

Ofsted uses the term Intent to describe a nursery’s agreed way of working, it’s about the aims of a nursery with helping children to develop and learn.

What is Implementation?

Implementation is about what you do every day to help children to progress.

It’s about the resources that are made available, the way in which you interact with children and the opportunities that are provided. Ofsted refers to this as teaching the early years in its framework.

What is Impact?

Impact is about how you know what you do is making a difference. This can be shown through your observations and assessments for each child and how well the children are known by the staff including their likes and dislikes and where they show less interest. Through observations it can show that children are learning and any difference that the staff are making to move learning on.
