You land the job of your dreams at a nursery/pre school/Montessori and a year goes by, then two and then three and yet you are still in the same position. You see others being promoted and yet you are being passed by which leaves you feeling frustrated and unwanted. Where is it going wrong and how can you progress?

Follow these points and this should help:-

You need to make a plan and it has to be realistic. It is impossible to be qualified as a Level 2 Nursery Assistant and expect to be a Deputy Manager in two years time. Why is it unrealistic? Because in order to progress you need to serve your time working in each position so that you have great experience. Making a plan will allow you to know where you are going and what you are doing.

It is always a good idea to find someone who can be your mentor. This is someone who has been where you have been and have progressed. It can be the Nursery Deputy Manager, Nursery Manager or Nursery Room Leader. It must be someone who is easy to talk to and inspirational to you.

Whenever you have a performance review listen to what is being told to you. If there are negative comments listen to what is being said and ask for advice on how you can improve. Turn a negative into a positive. If you are always late to work make sure you get up an extra 30 minutes earlier so that you can get to work 10 to 15 minutes before your shift starts. If you always leave work exactly when your shift ends when the Nursery Manager is asking for staff to stay behind it shows that you are not a team player. Instead offer to stay behind whenever you practically can. You also need to speak to your Nursery Manager and let them know that you are keen to progress and if you are being overlooked politely ask why.

If training is being offered always accept it as you can never train enough. Study hard and increase your knowledge.Help out as much as you can and be proactive. Work hard in the same way as you would if you owned the company.Lastly make sure you eat healthily, exercise often and sleep well. Being healthy will help you to work well.
